Super Bowl LVIII was not just a showcase of elite athleticism and competitive spirit but a vivid illustration of a timeless truth: talent alone is not enough. The San Francisco 49ers, despite their immense talent, encountered this harsh reality in a dramatic showdown that ultimately favored the Kansas City Chiefs.

This game is a compelling case study for leaders, as it underscores the critical importance of mastering the fundamentals and the costly nature of mistakes. It also emphasizes that success hinges not merely on the capabilities of individuals but also on execution, adaptability, and collective resilience.

Talent vs. Fundamentals

Throughout Super Bowl LVIII, the 49ers demonstrated exceptional talent, with several players capable of making a significant impact. Yet, as the game unfolded, it became evident that talent alone could not guarantee victory. That’s because football, like leadership, is grounded in fundamentals and the ability to adapt to changing conditions.

In contrast, Patrick Mahomes’ ability to find alternative strategies to engage his receivers and make pivotal plays was a class in altering a game plan in response to the evolving landscape while maintaining focus on the ultimate goal. His ability to bring it back to the basics and adapt was instrumental in the Chief’s win. According to Forbes, “Resilient leaders must turn current conditions into opportunities, quickly adjusting their behaviors, strategies, and ideas to meet the needs of the changing environment.”

In leadership, as in football, talent can only take you so far. A leader might possess innate charisma and vision, but their potential impact diminishes without a solid grasp of clear communication, strategic planning, and effective team management. The 49ers’ Super Bowl experience is a poignant reminder that even the brightest talent falters without solid fundamentals.

Learning From Mistakes

A series of hard-fought victories marked the 49ers’ journey to Super Bowl LVIII. Yet, their performance in Las Vegas underscored the reality that big moments magnify mistakes, and for the 49ers, those errors were not just visible; they were decisive.

Similarly, in leadership, mistakes can disrupt team harmony, derail projects, and compromise objectives. The key, however, does not lie in avoiding mistakes altogether—a feat impossible in football, leadership, and life—but in fostering an environment where mistakes are viewed as opportunities for learning and growth. The ability to swiftly recognize, address, and learn from our errors can transform potential setbacks into powerful lessons for future success. This mindset allows teams to adapt, evolve, and overcome challenges.

In a 2023 Harvard Business Review article, Inigo Gallo explains, “Acknowledging and learning from wrong turns helps leaders make their teams… stronger. Failing to take advantage of these opportunities… may be the biggest leadership mistake of all.”

Lessons From the Game

Super Bowl LVIII is more than a case study in the dynamics of football; it’s a powerful lesson in leadership. The parallels between it and the challenges faced by leaders in various fields are striking:

  • Emphasize the Fundamentals: The Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory, particularly in an overtime game, underscores the importance of executing fundamentals under pressure. Leaders must ensure their teams are well-prepared to apply their skills when it matters most. When the 49ers won the coin toss at the start of overtime and elected to receive the ball first, it sent shockwaves around the world and became a talking point when they eventually lost the game. Why was this a major focal point? Because it was clear after the game that the 49ers were unfamiliar with the new overtime rules, while the Chiefs had gone over them several times during the season and playoffs. Just as great football teams repeatedly practice the basics, leaders must continually work to hone the fundamentals of leadership. Winning or losing often comes down to the team that emphasizes and executes the fundamentals. What are the fundamentals of your business or organization? Does the mastery of them remain a constant focus?
  • Learn from Mistakes: Mistakes are inevitable, but our responses as leaders determine the extent of their impact. The 49ers’ and Chiefs’ paths to the Super Bowl offer lessons on creating cultures that value mistakes as opportunities for growth. As such, leaders should foster a culture of accountability and learning where errors are openly discussed and used for development; this can be transformative.
  • Adaptability and Resilience: The Chiefs’ ability to adjust their game plan and overcome a first-half deficit showcases the critical nature of adaptability. Influential leaders must be able to pivot in an instant in response to changing circumstances while keeping their teams focused and motivated. For example, during the first two quarters of the game, the Chiefs struggled a bit on defense, primarily running zone coverage. Brock Purdy and the 49ers were carving up the zone coverage, prompting the Chiefs to switch to man coverage at the start of the second half. Adapting on the fly and making an in-game adjustment had a significant impact on the final result. When great leaders and teams face setbacks, they face them head-on and use them as stepping stones for future success.

A Masterclass in Leadership

Super Bowl LVIII was more than a championship game; it was a masterclass in leadership that showcased the highs and lows of competition and an unyielding demand for excellence. For leaders in all fields, the insights gleaned from this epic showdown underscore the timeless truth that success is not merely a product of talent but the result of mastering and executing the fundamentals flawlessly under pressure. As we reflect on the lessons of this Super Bowl, let’s keep in mind that excellence, both on the football field and in the boardroom, comes down to mastering the basics.

Working to get better every day of our lives and striving to reach our full potential should be a major life goal for us all. Whether it’s complacency, the fear of failure, bad habits and plenty other factors that come into play as to why most never fulfill that major goal — that doesn’t have to be the story for you.

You can increase your chances of making sure that’s never going to happen to you by being intentional in your approach and understanding what’s holding most people back in the first place.

Here are three things that will always rob you of reaching your potential.

1. Having a limited vision.

A very sad but hard truth is that one of the main reasons that robs so many of reaching their full potential is the limited vision that they have for their lives. They let their failures, heartbreaks and misfortunes throughout the course of their lives dictate what’s in store for them and cloud their vision as to what’s really possible.

Any great organization, individual or even team that went on to achieve an incredible accomplishment all started with expanding their vision and being able to see it all take place in their minds before it happened in reality.

Expanding your vision consists of constantly going to work on your mind. Read uplifting and inspirational books to help rewire your current level of thinking. Set big and challenging goals that excite you — and then look at them every single day. Adopt positive self-talk as a daily habit and start to picture yourself as a healthy, accomplished and positive person. Visualize yourself winning and accomplishing whatever major goal or dream that is deep within your heart.

2. Associating with negative and toxic people.

We end up becoming who we hang out with the most. Over time, we begin to adopt their habits, talk like they talk, dream like they dream and embark on the life journey that they embark on as well.

I have seen hundreds upon hundreds of the most talented athletes in the world throw their career down the drain all because of who they associated with on a regular basis. I have seen hundreds of entrepreneurs who had a great idea and even begin to take action moving that idea forward, but ended up falling flat on their face all because of who they let hang around them.

I have seen incredibly talented teams that were expected to dominate the market in business or win a championship in athletics, but the few negative and toxic team members ruined it all for everyone. The bottom line is that who you choose to have around you absolutely matters — and has a large determining factor as to what the final outcome is.

3. A lack of fight and resolve to persevere through the challenging times.

Things will never be perfect for any of us. We will fail, lose focus from time to time, get discouraged, lose self-confidence and maybe even think that where we currently are is all there is.

Every great achievement to ever take place in history was all because of someone who possessed a ridiculous fight and resolve to persevere through the challenging times to end up getting to their final destination that labeled them a champion. You are going to get knocked down throughout the course of your journey.

That’s just a non-negotiable. However, the one thing that you determine is what happens after you get knocked down. You have the decision to either stay on the ground and accept defeat — or get back up and fight every waking moment to get to where you want to go.

How many of you have heard the famous Benjamin Franklin quote, “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail?”

If this is your first time seeing it, read it again. I cannot stress the importance of these wise words enough. People often talk about how they are waiting for their big break or that if they were just given the opportunity, they would take it and run with it.

But would they really? That would mean that they have to be prepared when the opportunity presents itself, and unfortunately, the majority are simply not. A really bad habit to get into is talking more about what you would do given the opportunity than actually working to create that reality. Failure to plan is a plan for failure, even if you do not intend to do so.

What if everything you are going through is preparing you for that moment? Those who are proactive about their possibilities know that they can create opportunities for themselves and, in that process, prime themselves for success. If you feel there is not enough opportunity knocking, ask yourself if you are preparing for it as much as you are talking about it. Failure to plan is a plan to fail when it comes to building your own luck, and failing to prepare for going out and creating opportunities can be equally costly.

One thing I’ve learned from both failing to prepare and being prepared at pivotal times in my life is that life presents us with limited windows of opportunity. These windows may never come again. Many are once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. There are windows that will swing open, and if you’re not ready at that moment, you have to bite the bullet and accept it as a missed opportunity.

It’s as simple as this—he who fails to plan plans to fail. Back in high school, I was a baseball standout. MLB scouts came to watch me play, but my involvement in delinquent behavior led to my expulsion from my baseball team. I was failing to prepare for my big moment while positively shaping my future reality. What if everything you are going through is preparing you for your next big chance, but you don’t recognize it? I had all the talent in the world, but that wasn’t enough. I had to reluctantly accept it as a major loss and understand that only I was to blame. Failure to plan is a plan for failure, and I learned that lesson the hard way.

It is important that, no matter how skilled, talented, or knowledgeable you are in your respective field, you spend time every day preparing. Prepare for the next step, the next goal, and the next big moment when it arises, because you never know when it will come. The truth is, he who fails to plan plans to fail, and nothing stifles potential more than a lack of preparation. I’ve found that the biggest regrets come from individuals who had a window of opportunity that they weren’t prepared for. Whether it was the job interview that they tried to wing, or the endorsement that they lost. There is nothing worse than failing to prepare for your big moment and the feeling of your dreams being close enough to touch and then watching them slip through your fingertips, never to return.

Whether I view my life as an athlete or in the business arena, preparation makes all the difference. Preparing for a game and studying your opponent are necessary in order to win. If you don’t know your opponents’ strengths, you’re going to come out blindly, hoping that your skill level will outweigh theirs. True champions do more than that. They don’t gamble on their skill level. They combine it with diligent preparation. It’s important to note that failing to prepare is a form of preparation, albeit not the kind we prefer. Failure to plan is a plan to fail, and that mindset applies across every aspect of life.

Going into a meeting looking for a capital investment for your start-up and relying on your knowledge and passion is simply not enough. True successors combine their passion and knowledge with meticulous research and preparation. You need to know who your investors are before you can convince them how valuable this investment is for them, not you.

Before a keynote, I don’t just go on stage and give a blanket speech on performance, leadership, or sales. I study the organization I’m speaking to, crunch their numbers, address their challenges, and cater content specifically to them. This preparation makes all the difference and will set you apart from the people just going with the motions.

What if everything you are going through is preparing you for a pivotal moment that could change your life forever? It’s often obvious to spot who is prepared or not. Whether it’s the start-up pitch, the keynote speaker, or the athlete taking the field, preparation is not a concept you can throw together quickly. You cannot “fake it ‘til you make it,” and you certainly can never wing it.

It takes time, discipline, thought, effort, research, organization, and even some meditation. It’s an investment in yourself, your product, and your business, and those who are prepared are noticed. If you want to create possibilities, prime yourself for success, and capitalize on opportunity, then you must simply begin to prepare as such. Just remember, a failure to plan is a plan for failure, and failing to prepare is detrimental to everything you want out of life.

Every week, I am fortunate to be surrounded by some of the world’s most extraordinary achievers. Being surrounded by these men and women opens my eyes to how they differentiate themselves from the rest of the population.

I’m not referring to anyone being better than the next person, because I truly believe we are all created equally. However, what I do refer to is how they think and go about their lives.

Vince Lombardi once said, “The quality of a person’s life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen field of endeavor.”

If you take a look at some of the world’s greatest athletes, most successful entrepreneurs, or anyone who has mastered their craft, you will find that they made a firm commitment to daily excellence. Constantly striving for excellence in every area of your life is ultimately what will determine the quality of your life, no matter what you do for a living.

Committing to excellence is what has shaped some of the most successful companies. Committing to excellence is what turns an average athlete into a great athlete. Committing to excellence is what spurs an ordinary person to creating extraordinary success for themselves.

Sure, you can show up at work and just keep busy and act like you are doing something when the boss is around, but is that really going to advance you to where you really want to go in life? I highly doubt it. But what will take you to where you want to go in life is to focus on the task at hand and commit to do your work to the best of your ability day in and day out.

Excellence is not about how much money is in your bank account or what kind of car you drive. Excellence is about waking up each morning and declaring that you will do your best at everything you do and be better than you were the day before.

Excellence is not about settling for average. Excellence is not about settling for average. When you give your all at everything you do, when you make a commitment for excellence daily, you will suddenly start to see the quality of your life escalate. You will feel more at peace. You will feel a sense of accomplishment like never before because you know that deep down, you gave your all.

Make up your mind that you will commit yourself to excellence daily. When you do, you are well on your way to places where halfhearted people will never go!

In college, I had the wonderful privilege of playing football for coach Terry Hoeppner at Indiana University.

He was the type of leader who made a lasting impression on me after the first meeting for the rest of my life. His energy, enthusiasm and passion to bring out the best in others is what totally reeled me in when the time came for me to decide where I would play college football.

I still get the question all the time: “Why did you choose Indiana when you had the opportunity to go to programs that won championships before?” The reason why I chose Indiana University over other schools is because of the man who made a profound difference in my life, coach Hoeppner.

While I was at Indiana University, I and other members of my football team wore shirts with the letters GBT engraved on the back. This stands for “Get Better Today.” Coach Hep would remind us over and over again that the only thing that truly matters is to capitalize on the opportunity to live another day and promise ourselves to “GBT.” Above all else, if we focused on getting just a little better than the day before and do this daily, over time the results would be substantial.

I still use the GBT method today and speak about it wherever I go. It doesn’t matter the type of work you do. If you do this daily and utilize the GBT concept it can take you to the top and help you become the absolute best at what you do over time.

Something I often see is people seeking instant gratification without putting in the necessary work required. People forget the importance of waking up each morning and focusing solely on maximizing their life for that particular day — not tomorrow, next week or next month, but today. You must do this daily.

Whether you’re an executive, teacher, salesman or stay-at-home mom, you have the opportunity to get better today. Every single day you’re faced with countless obligations and distractions. It’s your job to minimize the things standing in your way preventing you from becoming the best version of yourself and being phenomenal in the game of life.

One of the first decisions you can make is to determine that each day no matter what your circumstances are, the struggles you’re facing or how unhappy you are, you will find ways to get better. Some days will be challenging and will consume all your energy. But if you don’t make a deliberate effort to get better, you won’t.

Make the decision to GBT. Write it down on a Post-it note and place it where you can see it five or six times every day. Pick one area that you want to get better in for that day and write that down, too. Carry it in your wallet or purse and look at it every chance you get.

Over time, your decision to get better every single day will reap tremendous benefits in your life and drastically increase your success rate.
